In foods, the most abundant sources of vitamin E are vegetable oils such as palm oil , sunflower , corn , soybean , and olive oil . Nuts , sunflower seeds , seabuckthorn berries, kiwifruit , and wheat germ are also good sources.Other sources of vitamin E are whole grains , fish , peanut butter , goats milk, and green leafy vegetables .Although originally extracted from wheat germ oil, most natural vitamin E supplements are now derived from vegetable oils, usually soybean oil.The content of Vitamin E for rich sources follows:
Wheat germ oil (215.4 mg/100 g)
Sunflower oil (55.8 mg/100 g)
Almond oil (39.2 mg/100 g)
Hazelnut (26.0 mg/100 g)
Walnut oil (20.0 mg/100 g)
Peanut oil (17.2 mg/100 g)
Olive oil (12.0 mg/100 g)
Peanut (9.0 mg/100 g)
Pollard (2.4 mg/100 g)
Corn (2.0 mg/100 g)
Asparagus (1.5 mg/100 g)
Oats (1.5 mg/100 g)
Chestnut (1.2 mg/100 g)
Coconut (1.0 mg/100 g)
Tomatoes (0.9 mg/100 g)
Carrots (0.6 mg/100 g)
Goat's milk (0.1 mg/100ml)
As of 2009 , human trials and surveys that have investigated potential association of vitamin E intake with incidence of cancer remain generally inconclusive. Antioxidants such as vitamin E help protect against the damaging effects of free radicals, which may contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer.Vitamin E also may block the formation of nitrosamines , which are carcinogens formed in the stomach from nitrites consumed in the diet.It also may protect against the development of cancers by enhancing immune function. Some evidence associates higher intake of vitamin E with a decreased incidence of prostate cancer (see ATBC study) and breast cancer .Recent studies have found that increased intake of vitamin E, especially among smokers may be responsible for an increase in the incidence of lung cancer, with one study finding an increase in the incidence of lung cancer by 7% for each 100 IU of vitamin E taken daily.
Antioxidants are being studied to determine whether they can help prevent or delay age-related growth of cataracts, a clouding of the tissue of the lens of the eye.Observational studies have found that lens clarity, which is used to diagnose cataracts, was better in regular users of vitamin E supplements and in persons with higher blood levels of vitamin E. A controlled trial of high doses of vitamins C and E and beta carotene found no effect on the risk of developing cataracts.Similarly, a trial using vitamin E alone found that vitamin E supplementation produced no change in the risk of developing cataracts or the rate of progression of existing cataracts.
A 2007 study published in the European Journal of Ophthalmology found that, along with other treatments for glaucoma , adding alpha-tocopherol appeared to help protect the retina from glaucomatous damage.
Preliminary research has led to a widely held belief that vitamin E may help prevent or delay coronary heart disease , but larger controlled studies have not shown any benefit.Vitamin E may help prevent or delay coronary heart disease by limiting the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol.Vitamin E also may help prevent the formation of blood clots, which could lead to a heart attack.
Vitamin E is widely used as an inexpensive antioxidant in cosmetics and foods.Vitamin E containing products are commonly used in the belief that vitamin E is good for the skin; many cosmetics include it, often labeled as tocopherol acetate, tocopheryl linoleate or tocopheryl nicotinate.
Vitamin E is often claimed by manufacturers of skin creams and lotions to play a role in encouraging skin healing and reducing scarring after injuries such as burns on the basis of limited research, but the weak evidence of a benefit of silicon gel sheeting with or without added Vitamin E is limited by the poor quality of the research. One study found that it did not improve or worsen the cosmetic appearance in 90% of patients, with a third developing contact dermatitis .

Soy and Fish Lower Cancer Risk
发帖者 ADuu | 4/29/2009 04:48:00 AM | blogger, cancer, cook, dwg, fish, food, Health | 0 评论 »Women who ate soy regularly as children have a lower risk of breast cancer, American researchers report. And men who eat fish several times a week have a lower risk of colon cancer, a second team of researchers have told the American Association for Cancer Research.
The studies add to a growing body of evidence about the role of diet in cancer. Cancer experts now believe that up to two-thirds of all cancers come from lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet and lack of exercise.
The US National Cancer Institute and researchers at the University of Hawaii found that women who ate the most soy-based foods, such as tofu and miso, when aged 5 to 11, reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by 58 per cent. It was not clear how soy might prevent cancer, though compounds in soy called isoflavones have estrogen- like effects.
A second study showed that men who ate fish at least five times a week had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing colorectal cancer compared with men who ate fish less than once a week.
Many kinds of fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which interfere with the cyclooxygenase-2 or COX-2 enzyme. COX-2 affects inflammation, which may play a role in tumour growth.

Baby Broccoli Can Prevent Stomach Cancer
发帖者 ADuu | 4/27/2009 04:29:00 AM | blogger, cancer, dwg, Health | 1 评论 »Eating 70 gm of baby broccoli daily for two months may protect against a common stomach bug that is linked to gastritis, ulcers and even stomach cancer, a study in Japan has found.Fresh broccoli sprouts contain plenty of sulforaphane, a natural biochemical that appears to trigger the production of enzymes in the gut that protect against oxygen radicals, DNA-damaging chemicals, and inflammation. In an article published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, scientists said they found that eating 70 gm of baby broccoli daily may help stave off some serious health problems.
Early Soy Diet May Protect Against Breast Cancer
发帖者 ADuu | 4/25/2009 04:27:00 AM | blogger, cancer, dwg, Health | 0 评论 »CHICAGO – Asian-American women who ate a lot of soy as children had a 58 percent reduced risk of developing breast cancer, US researchers said on Monday in a finding that suggests soy may have a protective effect.
"Childhood soy intake was significantly associated with reduced breast cancer risk in our study," said Dr. Larissa Korde of the National Cancer Institute, whose study appears in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.
Historically, breast cancer rates among white women in the United States are four to seven times higher than in women in China or Japan, Regina Ziegler of the National Cancer Institute said in a statement.
"This is the first study to evaluate childhood soy intake and subsequent breast cancer risk, and this one result is not enough for a public health recommendation," she said, adding that the findings need to be replicated in other studies.

Caffeine May Offer Some Skin Cancer Protection
发帖者 ADuu | 4/23/2009 03:58:00 AM | blogger, cancer, dwg, Health | 2 评论 »"We have found what we believe to be the mechanism by which caffeine is associated with decreased skin cancer,"said lead researcher Dr. Paul Nghiem, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Washington in Seattle. For the study, Nghiem's team looked at caffeine's effect on human skin cells in a laboratory that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation. They found that in cells damaged by UV rays, caffeine interrupted a protein called ATR-Chk1, causing the damaged cells to self-destruct.
Nghiem said,
"Caffeine has no effect on undamaged cells,Caffeine has no effect on undamaged cells,This is a biological mechanism that explains what we have been seeing for many years from the oral intake of caffeine."But, Nghiem added, people shouldn't increase the amount of coffee or tea they drink to prevent skin cancer."You are talking a lot of cups for a lot of years for a relatively small effect," he said."But if you like it, it's another reason to drink it."
It's possible that topical caffeine preparations might one day be used to help prevent skin cancer, Nghiem said."Caffeine is both a sunscreen and it deletes damaged cells," he said."It may well make sense to put it into a sunscreen preparation."
"This study tells me that caffeine may be a useful ingredient topically to remove ultraviolet-genetically damaged cells from reproducing,"Dr. Robin Ashinoff said."This may help prevent the development of skin cancer."
"It is interesting that caffeine, which is thought to have a negative connotation, has already been shown to be associated with lower incidences of non-melanoma skin cancers in several epidemiological studies," she added.
"And, the study doesn't discuss how much caffeine would be needed for any real benefit," Dr. Albert Lefkovits said."For instance, many people drink large amounts of caffeine on a daily basis and still get skin cancer. Protecting yourself from the sun is currently the only proven way to prevent skin cancer."
Eat Yogurt, Avoid Bladder Cancer
发帖者 ADuu | 4/23/2009 03:41:00 AM | blogger, cancer, dwg, Health | 0 评论 »Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm studied the diets of 80,000 patients in a nine-year span and published their findings in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
They concluded that women who consumed two servings of yogurt every day were 45% less likely to develop bladder cancer than those who only eat it occasionally or not at all (36% for men).
Lead study author Alicja Wolk, Ph.D., says the probiotic called lactobacillus in cultured dairy products could be responsible for providing these protective benefits.

Oral Sex Really Does Cause Some Throat Cancers
发帖者 ADuu | 4/10/2009 03:08:00 AM | blogger, cancer, dwg, Health | 0 评论 »It is a fact most men will not want to know, but research has proven that a virus which is contracted through oral sex can cause throat cancer.A study conducted by Johns Hopkins University has revealed that the HPV virus poses a greater risk in contracting cancer than smoking or alcohol.
The American study of 300 people also found that that those with more than six partners were almost nine times at greater risk of contracting the disease. And those who had already experienced a previous oral HPV infection were 32 times more likely to develop cancer.HPV is the cause of roughly 70 per cent of cervical cancers. However experts said a wider study was needed to confirm the findings.
Researchers said oral sex was the main mode of transmission of HPV but could not rule out that it could also be passed through kissing.Scientists said the majority of HPV infections had no symptoms and often did not require treatment.
Study author Dr Gypsyamber D'Souza told the BBC:
'It is important for health care providers to know that people without the traditional risk factors of tobacco and alcohol use can nevertheless be at risk of oropharyngeal cancer.'Co-researcher Dr Maura Gillison said that oropharyngeal cancer is still relatively uncommon and that most people who contracted HPV probably wouldn't develop throat cancer.

Skin Cancer Now Top Cancer Among Young Women in UK
发帖者 ADuu | 4/10/2009 02:46:00 AM | blogger, cancer, dwg, Health | 0 评论 »Melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, is now the most common cancer in young British women, the country's leading cancer organization said Wednesday. The trend is particularly worrying since younger people are not generally those most susceptible to melanoma. But experts worry that increasing numbers of younger people being diagnosed with skin cancer could be the start of a dangerous trend.Women in their 20s make up a small percentage of all patients diagnosed with melanoma in Britain, but nearly a third of all cases occur in people younger than 50.
Based on current numbers, Cancer Research UK predicts that melanoma will become the fourth most common cancer for men and women of all ages by 2024, and that cases will jump from about 9,000 cases a year to more than 15,500.
Cancer experts attribute the rising number of skin cancer cases largely to the surge in people using tanning salons."Spending time on sunbeds is just as dangerous as staying out too long in the sun," said Caroline Cerny of Cancer Research UK.The organization is starting a SunSmart campaign to warn Britons of the dangers of being too bronzed.
Cerny said,
"The intensity of UV rays in some sunbeds can be more than 10 times stronger than the midday sun,"The World Health Organization has previously recommended that tanning beds be regulated because of their potential to damage DNA in the skin.
Experts said most deadly skin cancers could be avoided if people took the proper precautions when in the sun and avoided tanning beds.

Taiwan singer A Sun (A Sang), who touched many music lovers with her melancholy voice, has died of breast cancer.
So,how well do you know Breast cancer? It is a cancer that starts in the cells of the breast in women and men.Worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer (10.4% of all cancer incidence, both sexes counted) and the fifth most common cause of cancer death. In 2004, breast cancer caused 519,000 deaths worldwide (7% of cancer deaths; almost 1% of all deaths).
Breast cancer is about 100 times as frequent among women as among men, but survival rates are equal in both sexes.
Breast cancers are described along four different classification schemes, or groups, each based on different criteria and serving a different purpose:
Pathology - Each tumor is classified by its histological (microscopic anatomy) appearance and other criteria.
Grade of tumor - The histological grade of a tumor is determined by a pathologist under a microscope.A well-differentiated (low grade) tumor resembles normal tissue.A poorly differentiated (high grade) tumor is composed of disorganized cells and, therefore, does not look like normal tissue. Moderately differentiated (intermediate grade) tumors are somewhere in between.
Protein & gene expression status - Currently, all breast cancers should be tested for expression, or detectable effect, of the estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and HER2/neu proteins. These tests are usually done by immunohistochemistry and are presented in a pathologist's report. The profile of expression of a given tumor helps predict its prognosis, or outlook, and helps an oncologist choose the most appropriate treatment. More genes and/or proteins may be tested in the future.
Stage of a tumor - The currently accepted staging scheme for breast cancer is the TNM classification. This considers the Tumor itself, whether it has spread to lymph Nodes, and whether there are any Metastases to locations other than the breast and lymph nodes.
Breast cancer is usually, but not always, primarily classified by its histological appearance. Rare variants are defined on the basis of physical exam findings. For example, inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), a form of ductal carcinoma or malignant cancer in the ducts, is distinguished from other carcinomas by the inflamed appearance of the affected breast. In the future, some pathologic classifications may be changed. For example, a subset of ductal carcinomas may be re-named basal-like carcinoma (part of the "triple-negative" tumors).
