Do you like the child robot?

A "Child-robot with Biomimetic Body" or CB2, follows an object with his eyes at a laboratory in Osaka University
The creators of the Child-robot with Biomimetic Body, or CB2, say it's slowly developing social skills by interacting with humans and watching their facial expressions, mimicking a mother-baby relationship.

发帖者 ADuu | 3/25/2009 02:03:00 AM | , , , | 0 评论 »

Do you wash your underwear?Haha...It really is quite a comical question! But, at least in Japan, throw away your soap, detergent.Because the Japanese have invented odor-free underwear.

Koichi Wakata, a Japanese astronaut to live on the International Space Station, is testing the underwear created by textile experts at Japan Women's University in Tokyo. It is designed to kill bacteria, absorb water, insulate the body and dry quickly. It also is flame-resistant, and anti-static, not to mention comfortable and stylish.

The Japanese space agency plans to make the clothes available to NASA and its other space station partners once development is complete.A commercial line also is in the offing.

NICT - 3D Cube Display

Awesome!!!It's a cube that has displays on all sides, plus at angular intervals. The 3D display,"gCubik," now has displays on all of its six faces rather than three as in the case of its predecessor. The screens are also touch-sensitive,as if it were a real object -- assuming that object is trapped inside a cube and can never come out. This version is low resolution, running at 36 x 30 at every 6.7 degrees of view. They are working on a high resolution version.

The US astronomers said,

Two colossal black holes appear to be orbiting one another in sort of a cosmic minuet at the centre of a faraway galaxy formed when two separate galaxies collided.
These two so-called supermassive black holes, which are celestial objects with enormous gravitational pull, are locked in orbit about 5 billion light years away from Earth, the scientists said.

When galaxies collide and merge, as they do relatively often, the black holes at their center may gravitate toward one another because of their great mass, entering into orbit as these two appear to be doing.

An asteroid of the size of a 10-story building flew past Earth on Tuesday about twice the distance as the highest Earth-orbiting satellites, the U.S. space website said on Tuesday.

The space rock was about 115 feet (35 meters) wide, perhaps a bit larger than one thought to have created a colossal explosion in the air above Siberia in 1908 that flattened 500,000 acres (2,000 square kilometers) of forest

Asteroid 2009 DD45 was closest to Earth on Tuesday at about 8:40 a.m. ET. It was some 44,740 miles (72,000 km) away. That's twice the height of a geostationary communications satellite.

Astronomers had known the asteroid was coming and said there was no risk of collision. Other asteroids have been known to pass by closer to our planet.

Asteroids as big as the 1908 Tunguska object that devastated the Siberian forest might strike Earth as often as once every two centuries, scientists speculate. As space rocks enter Earth's atmosphere, smaller ones can break apart or explode before hitting the surface.

Paleontologists working in Peru have found a fossil from a bird that lived 10 million years ago, scientists said on Friday after returning from the dig site on the country's desert coast.

Paleontologist Mario Urbina of Peru's Natural History Museum said:

The species of bird had a wing span of 19.7 feet and fed mostly on fish from the Pacific Ocean. It first appeared 50 million years ago and was extinct about 2.5 million years ago because of climate change.

Now,world land speed record challenger Andy Green is confident that the product design students of University of the West of England are up to the task. Twenty of UWE's best worked on the cockpit for the Bloodhound SSC , aformentioned land vehicle:

World land speed challenger Andy Green, OBE tried out a mock-up of the cockpit he will use in his 1000 mph record attempt in 2011 at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) recently.Twenty product design students designed and built the cockpit test rig, taking into account the ergonomics of the driving position and relationship of steering, controls, seating and pedals. Product Design Senior Lecturer David Henshall said, "The test rig means fine adjustments to the position of all components can be measured and fed into a computer, so that the cockpit functions as it should do as the driver travels ten miles in 85 seconds." Student Hywel Vaughan said, "Everything had to be spot on. Andy Green's eye line needed to be dead on the 4 degree mark. Any lower and he wouldn't be able to see over the front of the car, any higher and it could interfere with the aerodynamics." Andy Green said: "There isn't a book to build a car like this and the students can't just look at their dad's car for guidance. The only requirement is to have four wheels. To be faced with a blank sheet of paper is quite frightening. The students at UWE have done incredibly well."
UWE is also involved as follows:
  • James Burch a lecturer in architecture has produced the designs and drawings for the Education Centre
  • Jim Longhurst, from UWE’s Institute of Sustainability Health and Environment is providing advice and guidance on the sustainability issues and opportunities arising from the project

The Hardest Substance On Earth

发帖者 ADuu | 2/26/2009 01:37:00 PM | , , , | 0 评论 »

What is the hardest substance on Earth?Diamond?NO,scientists tell you:No!Diamond is always a woman’s best friend! But it is no longer the hardest substance in the world. According to scientists,a called lonsdaleite, which scientists have discovered is 58% harder, and lonsdaleite's a little trickier to acquire.

From wikipedia:Lonsdaleite (named in honour of Kathleen Lonsdale), also called Hexagonal diamond in reference to the crystal structure, is an allotrope of carbon with a hexagonal lattice. In Nature, it forms from graphite present in meteorites upon their impact to Earth. The great heat and stress of the impact transforms the graphite into diamond, but retains graphite's hexagonal crystal lattice. Lonsdaleite was first identified from the Canyon Diablo meteorite at Barringer Crater (also known as Meteor Crater) in Arizona. It was first discovered in 1967. Lonsdaleite occurs as microscopic crystals associated with diamond in the Canyon Diablo meteorite; Kenna meteorite, New Mexico; and Allan Hills (ALH) 77283, Victoria Land, Antarctica meteorite. It has also been reported from the Tunguska impact site, Russia.

Hexagonal diamond has also been synthesized in the lab, perhaps even earlier than 1967, by compressing and heating graphite either in a static press or using explosives.

It is translucent brownish-yellow in color and has an index of refraction from 2.40 to 2.41, a specific gravity from 3.2 to 3.3, and a Mohs hardness of 7–8 (11). The Mohs hardness of diamond is 10; the lower hardness of lonsdaleite is chiefly attributed to impurities and imperfections in the naturally occurring material, and a pure sample could be 58% harder than diamond.[1] It can also be created by the thermal decomposition of a polymer, poly (hydridocarbyne), at atmospheric pressure under argon starting at 110 °C (230 °F).
